AFWA Recommends 18 Priority Projects for the 2018 Multistate Conservation Grant Cycle

At the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) Annual Meeting in Snowbird, Utah members recommended approval of 18 projects to be funded through the Multistate Conservation Grants Program (MSCG).

The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies applauds last week’s announcement of Secretarial Order 3356 by secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke. This order’s purpose is to “enhance conservation stewardship, increase outdoor recreation for all Americans, including opportunities to hunt and fish, and improve the management of game species and their habitat for this generation and beyond.”

The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies is pleased to see the preliminary report on the 2016 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, recently released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Preliminary survey data indicates that 101.6 million Americans (40% of the U.S. population 16 years and older) participated in wildlife-related recreation in 2016 and spent $156 billion on these activities. The initial findings indicate an eight-percent increase in the number of anglers and a 20-percent increase in the number of wildlife watchers since the survey was last conducted in 2011.

The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies welcomes Tony Tooke who was named as the next chief of U.S. Forest Service by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue on August 21. Tooke will succeed Chief Tom Tidwell, who announced his retirement on August 18 and will take affect September 1, after 40 years with the agency.

The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies applauds Deputy Secretary Bernhardt’s announcement about allocating much needed funding to state wildlife agencies and Native American and Alaskan tribes through the State Wildlife Grants (SWG) program and the Tribal Wildlife Grant (TWG) program. This funding helps address critical fish and wildlife needs by supporting species and habitats listed in approved state wildlife actions plans and encouraging key partnerships for wildlife conservation.

The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies would like to thank the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for convening the Sportsmen Access Ramp-Up Summit earlier this week at which participants discussed opportunities to implement Secretary’s Order 3347- Conservation Stewardship and Outdoor Recreation signed by Secretary Ryan Zinke on March 2, 2017. At this gathering, leaders from 46 conservation organizations worked together to discuss ways we can enhance access to our federal lands and waterways.
