Association's Partners in Flight Landbird Reports
In January 2004, Partners in Flight (PIF) published the North American Landbird Conservation Plan (the Plan). The Plan is the first continental assessment of the 448 landbird species that regularly breed in the U.S. and Canada.
In order to provide some of the information within the Plan in a more accessible format at finer geographic scales, PIF and the Association have provided the reports below for each state and Bird Conservation Region (BCR). They include priority species lists, and population estimates, population targets, and population objectives for those priority species. The information is sorted by habitat suite within each state and BCR.
Part I of the report is a Users' Guide. The guide explains the PIF planning process and includes caveats and assumptions which will help users determine how they might like to use the report in bird conservation planning. Part II contains the data and information. Appendix A provides an example of ongoing efforts to refine the process presented in the Plan for establishing local and regional species objectives in support of continental population objectives. This is directly applicable to bird conservation planning. You may view the Users' Guide now or download it below as a separate document.
We realize that there are many species lists out there but it is critical to note that the information in these reports is not new. It was simply pulled from the Plan and organized into a user-friendly format. We also realize that this is a first attempt to make population estimates for landbirds and that these estimates need refining. PIF is continuing to work with partners to refine estimates and welcomes input from the state and local level on the estimates.
